Vigil of Prayer for Vocations
“The Interior Discovery of God’s Gift”
Rome, Papal Basilica of St. John Lateran
Friday, April 24, 2026, 7:30 pm
The Church in Rome is preparing to experience an intense moment of prayer and communion on the occasion of the Vigil of Prayer for Vocations, entitled “The Interior Discovery of God’s Gift”, which will take place next Friday, April 24, at 7:30 pm, at the Papal Basilica of St. John Lateran.
Grateful to the Holy Father Pope Leo XIV for the Message “The Interior Discovery of God’s Gift”, offered for the upcoming World Day of Prayer for Vocations, this moment of prayer seeks to respond to the Pope’s invitation addressed to all the baptized, and in particular to “families, parishes, religious communities, bishops, priests, deacons, catechists, educators and lay faithful - to commit themselves ever more to creating favorable vocational environments (…), which will shine with living faith, constant prayer and fraternal accompaniment, in which God’s call can blossom and mature, becoming a path of happiness and salvation for each person and for the world” (cf. Leo XIV, Message for the 63rd World Day of Prayer for Vocations, March 16, 2026).
Although the Holy Father will not be in attendance due to his Apostolic Journey to Africa, he assures his paternal closeness and will spiritually accompany this moment of grace.
Promoted by the Dicastery for the Clergy, in collaboration with the Diocese of Rome, the Dicastery for Institutes of Consecrated Life and Societies of Apostolic Life, and the National Office for the Pastoral Care of Vocations of the Italian Episcopal Conference, the Vigil represents a living sign of communion and ecclesial synergy in the service of vocations.
The prayer gathering will bring together young people, seminarians, deacons, priests, religious men and women, and many of the faithful present in Rome, in an atmosphere of deep spiritual participation. The Vigil arises from the desire to offer the Church a strong moment of invocation, that the Lord may continue to raise up laborers for His harvest, sustaining and accompanying the vocational journey in its various forms of consecrated and ministerial life.
The celebration will be attended by Cardinal Lazzaro You Heung-sik, Prefect of the Dicastery for the Clergy, and Cardinal Baldo Reina, Vicar General of the Holy Father for the Diocese of Rome. The liturgy will be prepared by the Pontifical Roman Major Seminary and animated by the Diocesan Choir conducted by Maestro Mons. Marco Frisina.
The celebration will be marked by moments of listening to the Word of God, testimonies, and liturgical symbols, fostering an atmosphere of recollection and prayer. Particular attention will be given to the involvement of young people: all youth, students, and those engaged in priestly and religious formation in the City are invited to listen to the voice of the Lord and to respond generously to His call.
It is hoped that this Vigil, proposed as an annual event, may help to rekindle in the People of God the desire to follow Christ along the path of total self-giving, bearing abundant fruit for the life of the Church.
